1914 - 1918
In the First World War, iodine was found by Alexander Fleming to reduce the incidence of gas gangrene in the wounds of soldiers when compared to carbolic acid.
1955
Povidone-iodine was first released and quickly became the universally preferred iodine disinfectant.
1960s
Povidone-iodine preparations were introduced as an iodophor and its slow release of iodine within the formula was found to reduce the sting and irritation of traditional iodine treatments.

BETADINE® is registered as a trademark and launched in several international markets.
1969
BETADINE® antiseptic was chosen by NASA to wipe down Apollo 11 when it landed to sterilise the spacecraft against any space bacteria that might have hitched a ride.
